Commentators and politicians of both parties keep on referring to a "payroll tax cut". This is extremely deceptive. Finally someone is telling the truth. Rush is right. It amazes me that seniors are not marching on Washington to stop the attack on Social Security and Medicare. Where is the AARP on this?

Here we go again. Now that Herman Cain has pulled out of the Republican nomination race, Newt Gingrich is coming under attack. Senator Tom Coburn is in the news now with one of the first salvos.

Coburn told Fox News Sunday host Chris Wallace: "I'm not inclined to be a supporter of Newt Gingrich's having served under him for four years and experienced personally his leadership...I found it lacking often times." He went on: "There's all types of leaders. Leaders that instill confidence. Leaders that are somewhat abrupt and brisk. Leaders that have one standard for the people they are leading and a different standard for themselves. I just found that his leadership lacking."

Translated: "Newt is too mean". Chris Wallace summed up my feelings when interviewed later on Sunday Fox and Friends where he defended the former Speaker of the House: "Sometimes you have to break some eggs to make an omelet".

We've had enough of "weak-kneed" leaders. If we have any chance at all of turning the country around we need a leader who can lead.

Political pundits are taking notice of a recent bump former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich is getting in the polls.

I keep on hearing the talking heads say that Newt is the smartest candidate, but he has baggage. I remember what they are referring to, but I wonder how many others remember or even care in these times.

Is history repeating?

Winston Churchill sat as a non-paid "backbencher" in Parliament for years warning from the fringes of power about the rising Nazi threat. Nobody wanted to hear his pessimism and negativity.

When Hitler invaded Poland in 1939 and WW2 started, Winston, then an old man, was pulled from the ashes and was given his old post from WW1 as First Lord of the Admiralty.

Then, the very day that Nazi tanks stormed into France in 1940, the King named Winston Churchill Prime Minister. It has been said that the only man Hitler feared in England was Winston Churchill.

When a building is burning and you know a man with a fire hose, you don't worry if he has "baggage" from the past.

Recent polls tell us that Americans most are very scared. The world economy is crashing and our enemies are growing in power. The wolves are at the door and the knees of our "so called" leaders are shaking.

Are more Americans waking up? When they watch and listen to the Republican debates, do they see a man who can stop wolves? Is that man Newt Gingrich?

I think so.

I just read an article titled: "Aliens may destroy humanity to protect other civilisations, say scientists".

The authors of the study written about are from Penn State and NASA. They suggest that aliens (not the illegal type coming from Mexico) might attack and destroy us because of global warming. A link to the full study follows.

As an alum of Penn State, I am embarrassed about the Penn State connection, but not surprised. Global warming alamists will say anything to scare us into ruining our economy by regulating carbon dioxide.

I am more afraid of global warming alarmists like these authors and Al Gore than space aliens.

Don't hold your CO2-laced breath until ET arrives and is appointed by Obama to head the EPA. LOL.

Rick Perry - Pious or Political?

I first though the following article in the Washington Post was tongue-in-cheek, but I finally concluded that the author was serious. Can you imagine that Gov. Perry called for a prayer event and missed the opportunity to be political? Or was he just very, very clever?

Tea Party Hobbits and the Ring

Recently, John McCain caused an uproar by calling Tea Party people "hobbits". Click here. I just can’t see why he made so many angry. In my view, he made either an unintended or very clever complement to the Tea Party.

Author J. R. R. Tolkien created the hobbit character. In his famous work, The Lord of the Rings, the hero was hobbit Frodo Baggins. He saved Northwest Middle-earth from Sauron, the Dark Lord and titular Lord of the Rings.

Frodo was the consummate good guy. Honest and true, he was as much the "salt of the earth" as Tea Party people are today. His home, the Shire, exemplified today’s Middle America, where many Tea Party people live. (Liberals call this "fly over country")

Washington, DC can be likened to Mordor, home of the evil Lord Sauron (you decide who he is like today) who wanted to control all Northwest Middle-earth by possessing the Ring. (Like power politicians lust for today)

Frodo, the hero hobbit, was able to save Northwest Middle-earth by destroying the Ring in the fire of Mount Doom in Mordor. (Like an election and change today)

It seems that John McCain has illuminated the way to salvation for America – The Tea Party Hobbits.

Will the real Frodo please stand up? Please!!!

Is There a CFL in Our Future?

Since Congress couldn't pass a law to save our old light bulbs, as a public service, I direct you to a government site for info on how to clean up a broken Compact Fluorescent Light Bulb (CFL). Click here.

As a side note, two of our CFL's stopped working after a very short life. We found our local disposal site at the police department parking lot. (The receptionist at the police department was not amused when I brought in a CFL asking for information)

Don't Worry. Obama Knows Better,

Michael Goodwin voted for Obama, but finally the scales fell off his eyes and the wax dropped out of his ears.

"When President Obama started talking at his news conference Monday, I listened intently for 15 minutes or so. Then I got fidgety as his half-truths about the debt grew into full-blown whoppers. As he droned on, I did something I never did before during an Obama appearance: I turned off the TV.
Enough. He is the Man Who Won't Listen to Anybody, so why should anybody listen to him?
Tuning out and turning off the president does not fill me with gladness. He cannot be ignored.
But for now, I will leave that unhappy duty to others. I am tired of Barack Obama. There's nothing new there. His speeches are like "Groundhog Day."

Rick Perry for President (of Texas?)

A recent Wall Street Journal article titled "The Lone Star Jobs Surge" reported that "The Texas model added 37% of all net U.S. jobs since the recovery began."

The article shows how striking these number are by looking at the other two most populated states.

"What explains this Lone Star success? Texas is a big state, but its population of 24.7 million isn't that much bigger than the Empire State, about 19.5 million. California is a large state too—36.9 million—and yet it's down 11,400 jobs."

It was unstated in the article who the governor was during this time period. However, it was not missed by political pundits that these numbers beg for a Texas Gov. Rick Perry presidential candidacy in 2012. Today, I watched a discussion of this on Fox News Sunday with Chris Wallace.

Add to this that conservative Newt Gingrich's fortunes seem to be tanking after a mass exodus of his senior staff, and a Rick Perry run looks like a real possibility.

If Perry tosses his hat in the ring, Tea Party activists will no doubt jump for joy, but Perry's opponents will surely call him out for extreme statements like suggesting that Texas could secede from the union.

"But, before folks outside Texas (which is still a state, although Perry has threatened secession) get too excited, perhaps we should let them know just what might be in store for them if Perry ends up in the race for president or, God forbid, actually becomes president."

Social Security Benefits as "Handouts"

This morning I sent the following e-mail to Neil Cavuto of Fox News.

Neil,

I hear commentators on TV - even on "Cavuto on Business" this morning - speak of government "handouts" many times. Social Security benefits and Medicare benefits seemed to be lumped into that category by one of your commentators. (You were absent on that show)

The other day I was shredding old pay stubs. I was shocked when I saw that I was paying several hundred dollars in Social Security and Medicare taxes every two weeks. That does not even include my employer’s matching payments. I worked for over 40 years and had no choice but to pay these taxes.

There are many appropriate examples of handouts. My favorite one is the earned income credit where one who qualifies does not pay income taxes but gets a check back from the IRS. (better called welfare) Social Security payments and Medicare benefits are not examples of handouts.

Characterizing these payments as "handouts" is like calling a person who saves their hard earned money in a bank, a bank robber, when they draw out their own money.

Now that I receive a very modest Social Security payment, (now taxed as income), and find that my wife and I must pay several hundred dollars a month for Medicare Part B, characterizing such benefits as "handouts" is adding insult to injury.

PS - I watch your afternoon show almost everyday. Please consider addressing this in one of your editorials.

CFLs and Reading by Firelight

We have a couple of the new compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs). I have a hard time reading with them so I've stockpiled the old fashioned kind for reading.

Now it seems the best idea is to just don't turn them on in the first place.

According to a new report, "the bulbs should not be left on for extended periods, particularly near someone’s head, as they emit poisonous materials when switched on."

But if you do want electricity that way, buy one for yourself for a cool $32,670.00 (or more) and start blowing.

A free election was held in a place. The people spoke. In the people's house a vote was taken on a bill and it passed. Following is what happened.

In the upper house of this place, the minority upper house people fled the place to another place and are in hiding. A vote could not be taken.

Chaos breaks out around the world.

Can you tell where video one was taken? Can you tell in video two which place has a democracy? Are you confused yet?

Another Health Care Plan Falls

Another health care plan bites the dust - and it's a big one.

State Farm Insurance retired workers recently found out that if they are "Medicare-eligible" they will lose their supplemental medical coverage next year and will have to find it elsewhere. The insurance giant is located in Bloomington, IL State Farm is the largest property casualty in the USA. Read about it here.

Many conservatives warned that Obama-Care would drive private insurance out of the market. Obama promised that it wouldn't.

3M to end retirees' health plan

"The company says that retirees will be better off if 3M gives them money to shop for health care on the open market." Read about it here.

Previously, the news was that McDonald's "may" drop health insurance.

"McDonald's has warned federal regulators that it could drop its health insurance plan for nearly 30,000 hourly restaurant workers unless regulators waive a new requirement of the U.S. health overhaul." Read about it here.

Train Wreck Coming

People are fed up with excuses from the administration. The argument "It's Bush's fault" sounds foolish when bad things are happening and prospects for "change" for the better seem very unlikely any time soon. Where do I start?

I guess the economy is a good place.

"The federal debt will represent 62% of the nation's economy by the end of this year, the highest percentage since just after World War II, according to a long-term budget outlook released today by the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office."

Sen. Judd Gregg was quoted in the same article warning of the train wreck coming. (If you remember, Greg was "almost" made a cabinet secretary in the Obama administration, until he wisely pulled out.)

"The driver of this debt is spending,..Our existing debt will be worsened by the president's new health care entitlement programs…as well as an explosion in existing health care and retirement entitlement spending as the Baby Boomers retire."

We Need a Winston Churchill Today

Because of the many troubles in the world today, I've been reading a lot recently about and by Winston Churchill. I found the following quote he made and posted it on Facebook.

“Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is
also what it takes to sit down and listen.”

My son commented on that post: "Who said that and where is my chair?"

This is how I responded:

The quote was by Winston Churchill; two-time Prime Minister of the United Kingdom (Great Britain and Northern Ireland). (1940 to 1945 and again from 1951 to 1955.)

Now sit down.

No one would listen to Churchill when he warned Parliament about Hitler many times after March 1935 when Hitler broke the terms of the Treaty of Versailles.

Parliament sat down and listened when the Nazi army invaded France 10 May 1940. Churchill was made Prime Minister of the United Kingdom the same day.

The lesson was learned too late. Estimates of civilian and military deaths in WWII are 60,000,000 more or less.

My Dad once said that those that fail to learn the lessons of history are doomed to repeat it. I pray that there is a Churchill out there today.

WWII cost my Dad 6 years of his life. Thank God he survived because if he didn’t, there wouldn’t be a Jr. or the 3rd.

Two Views of Government Run Healthcare.

One view makes you cry.

One view tells you the truth.

I would say that most Americans care about the healthcare situation. History has shown that socialism is a nice idea but almost always fails. Sadly, Spain and Greece are finding that out now.

The Democrat majority could pass government socialized medicine if they wanted, since they have super majorities in both both houses of Congress. They can no longer blame the Republicans. It's "The People" who are stopping this.

The Democrats would do well to take a real hard look at Republican suggestions for health care reform and stop making "tear jerking" arguments that will not work - and most likely would force the country into a depression that would change the United States forever.

A quote from Winston Churcill says it well.

"Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery."

This morning after reading the article titled "The Victory of the Cross by " Newt Gingrich, Callista Gingrich, and Vince Haley, the words "Lest We Forget" crossed my mind. Read the article here.

I'll have to admit that I was not thinking of Veterans' Day at the time. I googled those words and found the following beautiful poem.

Later in the day, a good friend reminded me that it was Veterans' Day tomorrow (November 11). Then I searched further on the Internet and found the following You Tube, titled "In Flanders Fields - Lest We Forget". It is very appropriate for Veteran's Day.

The same friend invited me to attend a Veteran’s Day ceremony tomorrow. I decided to attend with him, and another vet, in honor of the men and women who serve and have served our country in the armed services. I'm embarrassed to say that I've never gone to such a ceremony before.

“Lest we forget” may you and I NEVER FORGET again. God willing, I will attend next year too.

Remember when Sarah Palin was "looked down on" by Charlie Gibson of ABC in an interview before the election?

Today Rush Limbaugh played a clip of the "Don and Roma" show on WLS of Don's question to Charlie Gibson about the recent Acorn revelations. Charlie said he was unaware of them. Huh???

Roma also made reference to a blog post by Jake Tapper, ABC News Senior White House Correspondent. Read it here.

Clueless Gibson complemented the WLS duo for keeping up one "the website".

Obama - Partner with God on Healthcare?

Stories are all over the Internet, Twitter and the news that Obama made the following statement in a conference call Wednesday, 8/19/2009 to 1000 rabbis from across the USA while pitching his health care reform package.

"We are God's partners in matters of life and death."

Does Obama Unfairly Blame the Elderly for Rising Health Care Costs?

In an April 14 interview, President Obama made the following statement:

“The chronically ill and those toward the end of their lives are accounting for potentially 80 percent of the total health care bill out here.”

He said this right after speaking about his grandmother's hip replacement and whether or not it was appropriate since she was terminally ill. He concluded “that’s where I think you just get into some very difficult moral issues...”. Read an article about that here.

One could infer from Obama's remarks and the context of his grandmother's end-of-life care, that heath care for the elderly is the major cause of rising heath care costs. The way Obama framed this is very misleading. The facts show a much different picture.

A Kaiser Family Foundation background brief on 2007 health care statistics found that most of the blame for rising health care costs falls on "chronic diseases" rather than health care for the elderly.

"...it is estimated that health care costs for chronic disease treatment account for over 75% of national health expenditures."

"experts agree that aging of the population contributes minimally to the high growth rate of health care spending."

Why is Obama unfairly focusing on health care costs of the elderly? It is no wonder that seniors worry that health care reform cuts will fall most heavily on them. They see reform and potential rationing as a rush to "kill grandma".

Obama, Terri Schiavo and National Health Care

It is interesting that Obama saw his "inaction" on a federal bill to save Terri Schiavo as a mistake on his part because his inaction allowed her another chance at life.

In stark contrast, Joe Lieberman saw the bill as the right thing because it did give Terri Schiavo anther chance at life.

OBAMA TO THE ELDERLY: TAKE A PILL

The Democratic House Bill 3200 on national health care should be defeated. Following are some reasons why. I pray you will take the time to review and consider.

Read an article here about the end-of-life provisions titled “Deadly Doctors”. It includes disturbing quotes from Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel, the brother of Obama's Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel.

Obama recently appointed him to two important health policy positions.

In context, the above information is why the Town Hall "mobs"are greatly concerned about "end of life" counseling in House Bill 3200

The following is from House Bill 3200, Section 1233 about "Advance Care Planning" for the elderly or terminally ill. Medical practitioners shall provide:

"an explanation by the practitioner of the continuum of end-of-life services and supports available, including palliative care and hospice..."

The bill allows Medicare to pay for such consultations every five years or more often if the personal is terminally ill.

The White House has clarified that these sessions are not “mandated” in a technical sense. However, the bill would allow practitioners to initiate the counseling. The incentive is that the government will pay for it. The government also would provide end-of-life counseling training to these practitioners. Read an article about this here.

I admit that this is personal with me. My Mom was in a nursing home. She was weak and confused. She was not eating enough and was becoming weaker. I felt she was depressed. I can only imagine her "choice" if a government trained "end-of-life" counselor spoke to her.

I would have wanted a counselor or minister to come to her and urge her to eat - and live, as I did.

House Bill 3200 promotes nothing less than “passive euthanasia” and should be defeated for this and numerous other reasons not expressed here.

National Health Care: Obama on Your Shoulder

In President Obama's press conference last night, he called out some imaginary doctor for taking out tonsils because he could make more money doing that than treating a sore throat.

"Right now, doctors a lot of times are forced to make decisions based on the fee payment schedule that's out there. So if they're looking and you come in and you've got a bad sore throat or your child has a bad sore throat or has repeated sore throats, the doctor may look at the reimbursement system and say to himself, 'You know what? I make a lot more money if I take this kid's tonsils out.'"

Obama makes an outrageous argument and is intellectually dishonest. He makes up an imaginary "straw man" that doesn't exist and can't defend himself. Obama would get an automatic "F" on a 7th grade paper for providing no evidence for his argument. That being said, who would you rather make a decision about taking out tonsils: a computer programmed by a government bureaucrat in Washington or your doctor looking at your throat?

The bottom line is that Obama and other ultra-liberals have trust issues. They do not trust "the rich", pharmaceutical companies, energy companies, insurance companies, car companies, bankers, the American people, Christians or Walmart - and the list goes on. They assume that only "government" can make wise decisions.

If you want Obama "on your shoulder", you deserve the so called "medical care" you will get.

Obama: Tilting at Green Windmills

Obama and the Dems want to wreck the domestic oil, gas and coal industries with cap and trade. (See my previous post) Windmills are popping up all over America and Obama promises "green jobs". He promises that we can "blow" our way to energy independence.

Why is Obama Spreading Panic?

To understand our current economic crisis, people only need to look back to the 2006 election. That's when Dems took back control of Congress. Before then, the economy was in pretty good shape.

The Dem negative drumbeat, that started after the 2000 election when George Bush was elected President, increased and finally resonated with voters. The Dem trashing of the economy and George Bush increased after their victory in 2006 with the goal of taking complete control of the government.

Prior to October 2008, thanks to John McCain's pick of Sarah Palin, it looked like the Republicans might hold the White House. Then, the October surprise hit with a banking crisis that was arguably created by the Dems. (Read my previous post on this here) First-term Senator Barack Obama rode a wave of fear to the White House.

The crowds cried: "Obama will save us!"

But things only have gotten worse in the economy day-by-day as Obama rams through one stimulus bill after another - worth trillions - through the Dem-controlled Congress.

Obama, who campaigned on "hope" is now preaching "doom and gloom" and many are asking: Why?

Dick Morris, former advisor to Bill Clinton, answers that question in his article titled "It’s Obama Spreading Panic." According to Morris, Barack Obama is:

"A global Paul Revere, he has not only aroused us, but incited fear and trepidation in his wake."

Never Again: The Slippery Slope to Eugenics

Many believe that abortion, euthanasia, withholding medical care, creating designer babies and cloning are leading us on a slippery slope towards eugenics.

The extreme of eugenics happened in Nazi Germany where the "so called" weak and inferior were eliminated. The horror was not limited to the Jews.

"Beginning in 1940, thousands of Germans taken from old age homes, mental institutions and other custodial facilities were systematically gassed. Between 50,000 and 100,000 were eventually killed."

Some fear that the new "stimulus" law pushes the United States further down the slippery slope towards eugenics. Betsy McCaughey wrote an excellent article on the stimulus bill that would lead one to believe that their fears are warranted. One quote has chilling overtones.

"The Federal Council [created by the stimulus law] is modeled after a U.K. board discussed in Daschle’s book. This board approves or rejects treatments using a formula that divides the cost of the treatment by the number of years the patient is likely to benefit. Treatments for younger patients are more often approved than treatments for diseases that affect the elderly, such as osteoporosis."

The Bible says that you reap what you sow. Dem leaders have been been moaning about the economy for months as a chief part of their campaign mantra. Then the "runs" on banks began.

Next, the bottom falls out of the mortgage banking system which leads to a steep stock market decline.

Report: SC Dem Chair: Palin's Main Qualification - No Abortions

There is a charge that the main qualification of Sarah Palin is that she hadn't had an abortion. Read the story about it on FoxNews.com here.

Interesting. Let's look at some truths.

Sarah Palin is the Governor of Alaska. She has had five children. Five beautiful children.
She hasn't had an abortion.
She has become a role model for woman and young girls.
She can work. She can succeed.
She loves her husband and her children.
She loves God and believes the Bible.
Because of her example, millions and million of babies, including those that are challenged, will be born and loved rather than ending up as medical waste or in someones test tube.

Ironically, the latest charge against Sarah Palin may be true. The lone qualification that she didn't have an abortion may be enough to make her the first woman Vice Presdent of the United States.

In the future, Sarah may even have paved the way for a future pro-life woman President. At least the candidate will have plenty of grateful voters that were given a new lease on life when their Moms decided to birth them rather than abort them - because of Sarah.

Barack Obama's Gaffe on Life at Saddleback Civil Forum

In last night's forum at the Saddleback Civil Forum, Barack Obama made a huge gaffe is his response to Pastor Rick Warren's question about abortion.

Pastor Warren asked:

"AT WHAT POINT DOES A 'BABY' (emphasis added) GET HUMAN RIGHTS IN YOUR VIEW?"

Obama stumbled around and answered in part:

"IT FROM A THEOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVE OR A SCIENTIFIC PERSPECTIVE, ANSWERING THAT QUESTION WITH SPECIFICITY, YOU KNOW, IS ABOVE MY PAY GRADE."

Incredulously, Obama did not challenge Warren's use of the word "baby" in his question. Obama bought into the assumption that a "baby" was being talked about. He then said he was in favor of "choice" (aka abortion).

Thus, according to Obama, a "baby" by "choice" can be aborted.

It is key in the abortion debate, as far as the pro-abortion people are concerned, that a "fetus", not a "baby", can be aborted.

Warren "loaded" the question and Obama took the bait.

Not Enough Wind

Polls tell us that this November the Dems will win the White House and hold Congress. There are many reasons why this would be very bad for the USA. My first post was about national defense. This one is about oil.

The country runs on energy. Oil has been and will be the way we power our vehicles. Most experts agree on this. Gas prices are way up and the Dems, in the same old rut, say that George Bush and the big bad oil companies are to blame. Really?

The truth: worldwide, more gas is demanded than is available. Econ 101: Prices go up. Econ 201: Increase supply and prices go down.

But guess what? At every turn, the Dems block our attempts to increase supply. As a result, we can't drill off most of our coasts and in Anwar, Alaska; and we can't build any more refineries.

The Dems have bowed to environmentalists who worry more about toads and moose than humans.

To make matters worse, we have to buy around 70% of the oil we use overseas. Billions of dollars flow out of our country. If we bought our oil here, American would make the profit while prices would come down.

Sen. Obama is in lockstep with the Dems on oil policy: "No, No. No". He wants us to develop alternative sources of energy, but he is short on specifics on how to do this.

Sen. Obama talks a lot about windmills. (So did Don Quixote.) I can imagine a windmill on top of our cars - sailing along the highways until the wind stops; then sitting along the side of the road like the sailing ships of old when the trade winds died.

John McCain and most Republicans are realistic. They recognize that our economy will be ruined unless we find more oil and find it quick to save our economy. That's another good reason to vote Republican in the fall.

New Election, Same Old Dems

Doom and gloom. Whine, whine, whine. Here we go again, ala Jimmy Carter.

The Dems hated it when George Bush was elected in 2000 and the Republicans took over Congress. Since then, they have done everything they could to regain power - even if it meant trashing the USA in the process.

The question is: Will the voters recognize this truth and restore sanity in the political system?

There is so much on this, that I hardly know where to start. But here goes. Future post will be related to this topic.

First and foremost is 9-11. This one is simple. Bill Clinton dropped the ball and ignored terrorism against the USA. As a result, George Bush was left with a plot hatched under Clinton's watch that exploded into a day where 3000 died in New York, DC and Pennsylvania.

The truth: No more attacks since 9-11-2001 when everyone thought there would be more - thanks to George Bush. The lie: Barak cries that Bush failed protecting the country against terrorism. Huh? And he says that we should not vote for John McCain because he would bring more of the same of Bush's policies. I say, let's keep this Bush policy in force. (No pun intended.)

For me, that is the end of the question who to vote for. There are many more reasons, but I will save them for future posts.

God Bless America - and God help us if we continue turning our backs on Him.

George Bush's poll numbers are moving up. Read the story about that here. Republican candidates should be cautious when distancing themselves from the President. Public opinion shifts often - sometimes rapidly.

That being said, Democrat candidates who "Bush" bash should be aware of this too. Hillary Clinton stands out of the crowd as one who is very careful when answering questions about Bush.

Opinion: Bush and Truman as Great Leaders - Unpopular But Right

I respect people who do what they think is right, even if it's not popular - and even if I don't agree with them. One example is Ralph Nader.

People can fault George W. Bush for what he does, but they can not fault him for doing - and saying what he thinks is right. In my case, I respect him both for doing what he believes is right and for doing what I believe is right.

That said, many believe that the President's stand on Iraq is the main reason he is so unpopular. He ranks right up - I mean right down there with past unpopular presidents Richard Nixon and Harry Truman. Read about it here.

Harry Truman's favorite saying was "the buck stops here". He ordered dropping the "A" bombs and thousands died - but World War Two ended quickly without a USA invasion of Japan which most probably would have cost even more lives and damage than the bombs. That was a hard decision. I doubt that few in history could have made that decision.

But Harry Truman was a leader. That's what countries need - those men or women who will do what is right regardless of popular opinion at the time. The voters recognized this and Truman was elected to a full second term to the shock of the press.

George Bush is a leader too. In spite of the polls and the MSM and his unpopular stand on Iraq, the voters gave him another term also.

I trust the voters. They seek and are drawn to leaders that are best for the country in the long term. The man or women who gains the voter's trust will be elected the next president. Look for the one who does and says what he or she thinks is right regardless of whether it is popular.

The Democrats may have taken over Congress, but they haven't won the hearts and minds of voters. In fact, their rating has fallen to 24 percent according to a recent AP-Ipsos poll. That's much lower than President Bush's 33 percent rating.

Fairness Doctrine - Talk Radio Needs to Balance MSM Liberal Bias

The Dems want to muzzle talk radio, while leaving the MSM unscathed.

The title of an AP story today reads "White House criticizes Clintons on Libby". The title should tell the whole story: "The Clintons Slam Bush on Libby and The White House Fires Back". The difference is subtle, but demonstrates how the truth can be twisted because of a liberal bias.

This is just one example of why the liberal MSM needs to be balanced by talk radio.

Major American Wind Farm Player Taken Over by Foreign Firm

Wind farms are all the rage now. Local pols are falling all over themselves to sign up. Environmentalists and Dems applaud saving ANWR in Alaska for the moose and polar bears and from the "big bad" American oil companies. But, countryside that was once beautiful is becoming transformed into, what I believe, a sci-fi nightmare. (see below)

Farmers are paid to host these modern-day windmills. They signed up with American companies and pols eagerly anticipated the extra tax revenue to fuel their favorite projects.

But wait - Horizon Wind Energy, a major USA wind farm company has been gobbled up by a foreign firm. Energias de Portugal, S.A. (“EDP”). What looked like a way for the USA to gain "energy independence" from other countries seems to have back-fired.

Barack Obama's Attack on Christian Right Leaders May Backfire

Barack Obama says that Christianity has been"hijacked" by "so-called leaders of the Christian Right". Read the story about this here.

The truth is that many liberal churches and their leaders have crafted their own brand of Christianity based on popular "feel good" values, not on the Bible.

The "so-called leaders of the Christian Right", as Obama calls them, are being maligned for being faithful to the Bible and traditional Christian values.

Liberal, "so-called leaders of the Christian Left" (and Dems) are generally pro-abortion, pro-gay marriage, pro-destroying living embryos for research, pro-euthanasia and against teaching intelligent design and praying in public schools.

Before I started reading and believing the Bible, I might have agreed with many of these liberal "values". But now that I actually have read and believe the Bible, I disagree with all of the same values. The Christian Right leaders didn't tell me what to believe, I merely came to agree with these leaders.

It is more accurate to say that liberal, "so-called leaders of the Christian Left", not Christian Right leaders, are trying to hijack Christianity.

If Barak Obama would look carefully at the polls, he will find that most Americans agree with the traditional values of the Christian Right. If he continues demonizing these same leaders and the voters they represent, he will soon find in the polls that his chances of becoming President are diminishing.

My bet is that Hillary Clinton is too politically savvy to make the same mistake.

Hillary Clinton - Will Rush Be Right?

Rush Limbaugh says that Hillary Clinton has an 80% chance of becoming the next President. Read about it here.

Hillary must listen to Rush because she is acting like she has already won the Dem nomination. She is taking positions and making statements that can only help her win in the general election.

For example, in a recent Dem debate, the candidates were asked if America is "safe" after 9-11. Mrs. Clinton's carefully worded answer set her apart from John Edwards and the other candidates:

"I believe we are safer than we were...We are not yet safe enough, and I have proposed over the last year a number of policies that I think we should be following." Read about it here.

Then, in a speech to the Take Back America conference today, Mrs. Clinton was booed by the ultra liberal group Code Pink as she declared:

"We're going to end the war in Iraq and finally bring home the troops...The American military has done its job...The American military has succeeded...It is the Iraqi government that has failed to make the tough decisions." Read about it here.

Hillary is obviously using the Bill Clinton play book by making cleverly worded statements that will please most everyone, but those on the far right and far left. Remember Bill's stand on abortion: "... abortion should not only be safe and legal, it should be rare." Read about it here.

Unless the Republicans can unite around a strong candidate, like Fred Thompson, Rush may be right.

Who Will Get the GOP Nod - Fred or Rudy?

Fred Thompson and Rudy Giuliani are the front runners for the Republican Presidential nomination.

Thompson isn't even a candidate for the nomination, yet he just moved ahead of Rudy and the rest of the pack according to a recent Rasmussen poll.

However, in a Real Clear Politics head-to-head general election poll, Rudy Giuliani does the best against Hillary and the other Dem candidates. While Rudy's liberal social views hurt him with GOP faithful, they have cross-over appeal and will draw many Dem moderates and independents to his side.

This presents a dilemma for the Republicans. Do they want to be "right" or do they want to win?

Gore Flip Flop on Iraq

Today, Al Gore is one of George Bush's harshest critics on the President's Iraq policy.

However, back in 1992, VP candidate Al Gore had a much different take on Iraq. He convincingly warned of the dangers posed by Saddam Hussein and even complained that Bush Sr wasn't tough enough on Iraq.

Dem Congress Even More Unpopular

The Dems may have won Congress in the last election, but it seems that they haven't won the hearts of the voters. Six months ago Congress had an approval rating of 36 percent (Los Angeles Times/Blooberg Poll). Guess what. That was "good" compared to the same poll taken now. The Dem led Congress now has plummeted to a dismal approval rating of 27 percent.

Harry Reid, the Dem Senate leader, polls even worse in the Rasmussen poll with a 19 percent approval rating.

Book Review: Alive and Kicking...Legal Advice for Boomers!

Alive and Kicking...Legal Advice for Boomers! by Kenney F. Hegland and Robert B. Fleming (Carolina Academic Press, 2007) is a book packed with good information. Although the authors are lawyers, the book goes into many subjects, other than legal advice, related to getting older and would be helpful to the elderly, near elderly and those interested in the elderly.

Alive and Kicking is an easy read. It's written in a conversational style and is laced with humor and witty sayings. Subjects range from staying healthy and coping with death to estate planning and trusts. Much of the advice given is general, not specific. The authors refer readers to lawyers for specific legal advice and other professionals for non-legal advice. They even caution using self-help books for drafting legal documents.

I especially found the chapters on wills and estate planning (Chapter 24) , trusts (chapter 26) and probate (chapters 25 and 37) very helpful.

There are few weaknesses in the book, with the exception that several chapters, not related to the law are, in my view, too overly general. For example, in the chapter on home care (Chapter 32), the authors advise: "If you are caring for an elder in your home, take a safety walk. Put yourself in their shoes." Then they list some simple things to look out for like "Are your rugs secure?" (p. 218) that some would feel is just plain common sense. Note - My wife, a retired RN who worked with the elderly, thought this was good advice, that many would not consider.

Overall, I highly recommend this reasonably priced book. It is especially a great resource for "baby boomers". Being a boomer myself, and facing many issues related to getting older, I learned much and it gave me lots to think about.

The liberals want more bureaucracy - something they love most. Now they want more government "interference" in employment. Supposedly they want to make sure wages are "fair" between men and women. Fair sounds good except when you try to define "fair".

Fred Thompson Wasn't There, But He Won The Debate

I watched a good part of the Republican debate tonight on CNN. It wasn't very exciting.

John McCain danced around on his stand of the immigration bill, while Rudy did a two step around the abortion and gay in the military debates. Sam Brownback looked good and was steady. Mike Huckabee gave a great answer on the culture of life. However, I thought Mitt Romney had the best answers and looked the most presidential of the lot.

After that, I turned over to Fox News and watched Sean Hannity interview Fred Thompson. I was very impressed. His calm demeanor, clear answers to the questions and deep soothing voice were very very reassuring that if he were elected, the USA would be in good hands. If Thompson decides to enter the race - which seems very probable - he will draw much of the far right support.

It's too early to tell who will come out on top, but my choice at this point would be Fred Thompson as the Presidential candidate and Sam Brownback as VP.

Mike Gravel (Who?) "Wins" the Dem Debate

I just watched a re-hash of the Democrat Presidential debate. Or I should say the Dem whining session about George Bush.

John Edwards wanted to re-establish the USAs "moral authority". Others alluded to that. To me, that was was code for "give them what they want" and they will "like us".

Another prominent theme was Iraq. Fingers were pointing in all direction about who did or didn't support the war. "I was wrong" was a familiar reply: More whining.

As to the economy and fiscal policy, most whined about the Bush tax cuts that benefited the "rich" and how we need to tax more and spent less. Hillary proudly declared that we need to go back to the economy that Bill built.

The only candidate that made any sense at all was former Alaska Senator Mike Gravel. Too bad that most don't know who he is.

There are signs that a dark cloud is forming over the Democrats.

Democrat congressional candidates promised much before the 2006 elections, but so far they haven't been able to transform their agenda into law. The Dem presidential race front runner, Hillary Clinton, just did a "flip-flop" on the Iraq war. Read the NewsMax.com story titled "Hillary Clinton: Iraq War Vote a Mistake" here. This change adds fuel to the charge that Democrats are weak on national defense.

John Edwards wants more taxes. Read the MSNBC story titled "Edwards says he’d consider tax hikes" here. This can only feed the voter's fear that a Dem President and Congress would not only repeal the Bush tax cuts, but go even further to raise taxes. This leaves an opening for the Republicans to once again tag the Dems as the "tax and spend party".

The big question will be if Republicans can translate Dem difficulties into Republican victories - in both the 2008 Presidential race and in their battle to re-gain control of Congress.

Rudy Giuliani on George Bush - "A Great President"

Rudy Giuliani defended President Bush while campaigning in Iowa Friday:

"He will be, I believe, a president who will be viewed by history for this one decision as being a great president...He decided in a flash to put our country on offense against terrorism."

While few would agree with Rudy today, I believe he is right. George Bush is a President with a backbone that was the right man for the times.

The question is, will Giuliani be the right man for the times for president as far as the Republican base is concerned? There is no doubt that he is seen as the strongest leader of the GOP candidates, but his views on abortion and gay marriage may keep him from the GOP nod. Ironically, these same views make Rudy the mostly likely candidate to win in the general election.

Rudy's answer to the concerns is that he will appoint conservative judges. How attractive that promise is to conservative Christians will be the key to the 2008 election.

First Landing in Virginia - The Founding of America

My wife and I watched a Christian Broadcasting Network presentation of a movie titled First Landing. It is the true story of the landing of English settlers on Cape Henry in Virginia Beach. The movie was produced by CBN and Regent University to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the event.

The colonists were on their way to establish the first permanent English colony, Jamestown. The movie is a story of Christian love and perseverance.

The main character of the movie is Reverend Robert Hunt, played by Guy Birtwhistle, who lead the first landing party. There is a moving scene where the colonists carry a wooden cross made in England and planted it on the shores of Cape Henry. Hunt prayed that the New World be dedicated to Jesus Christ and the spreading of the Gospel.

You can learn more about the movie, the establishment of the first colony and the role of Christianity in the beginnings of our country here.

My wife and I were moved by the movie. The cinematography and acting was excellent. The story was presented in fast paced short segments that will keep the viewer's interest.

However, after the program the following disclaimer rolled on the screen.

We were horrified. Sadly that is true.

Our Christian heritage is being covered up and denied before our eyes. Most of the MSM reporting on the anniversary of the founding of Jamestown this week do not mention the stated purpose of the colonists, which was to spread the Gospel to the New World. Their purpose was God’s purpose.

I pray that our country is re-dedicated to Jesus Christ and the spreading of the Gospel and that the spirit of the Jamestown settlers be re-ignited throughput the land.

Darrell Waltrip One-On-One

I just finished reading the book Darrell Waltrip One-on-One by Darrell Waltrip and Jay Carty. The book is a series of sixty short stories by Darrell that relate his faith to stories about his days as a NASCAR driver and now as a NASCAR announcer on Fox Sports.

Darrell Waltrip is one of the NASCAR greats, who has 84 NASCAR victories and in the 1980s was named the NASCAR Driver of the Decade. He also is a man of faith who leads a weekly Bible study for 75 men in his garage in Franklin, TN.

Jay Carty, a former NBA basketball player, turner minister, has a commentary for each of Darrell's stories that goes a little deeper into how Darrell's story relates to faith in God, the Bible and Jesus.

It's a great read and can be used for a 60 day devotional.

The book is personal to me because my wife is related to the Waltrips from Owensboro, KY. She is a distant cousin of Darrell. If fact, we visited Owensboro last week and were able to talk about Darrell and his brother Michael with people who know them well. We missed going to Wendell's Wonder Whip, that Darrell mentioned in the book, but we did get to enjoy Burgoo and mutton at another local restaurant. In fact, I enjoyed the mutton all night long.

My favorite stories in the book are about Darrell's relationship to Dale Earnhardt. They were friends off the track and enemies when racing against each other. Darrell called them "frienemies".

In the story titled "Duct Tape and the Word" Darrell and Stevie, Darrell's wife, tell of the day that Dale was killed in the Daytona 500. It was the first race that the two were not racing against each other. That day Darrell was new in the Fox Sports booth, announcing the race.

Near the end of the race just before Dale hit the wall, he was blocking for his teammates, Dale, Jr. and Darrell's brother Michael who eventually won the race - his first NASCAR Winston Cup victory.

When Dale and Darrell raced, Stevie would write out a Bible verse for both Dale and Darrell on duct tape. That day she wrote one for Dale.

"The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and our safe." - Proverbs 10:10 NKJV.

Darrell and Stevie knew that what once was a lucky charm for Dale, had become a symbol of Dale's true faith and love for Jesus - and that Dale is now in Heaven.

It is ironic twist that on that day I was watching the Daytona 500. I didn't usually watch NASCAR races. I heard Darrell's announcing, I saw Michael win the race and I watched in horror as a racing legend hit the wall and eventually died. Now I know the rest of the story.

Environmentalists say that private jet flights have a big "carbon footprint", and that taking commercial flights is a better option. Dem Negativism and the 2008 Election

I turned on the TV this morning and heard an interview with Illinois Senator Chuck Schumer. This time, the good Senator was bemoaning the FDA's handling of the pet food recalls.

On a daily basis, the Dems tell us how bad things are in the USA. Bad, bad, bad and how once they control both Congress and the Presidency "Happy Days" will return again.

Republicans generally maintain a dignified demeanor and tend to see the glass "half full". They see the USA as a great place to live - the best in the world.

I believe that, in time, Americans will become fed up with the negative Dem drumbeat and look again to Republican leadership. More on this line of thinking later.

First, I am no Don Imus fan. I confess that very early in the morning, before Fox and Friends, I have watched and listened to the "I-Man". His politics are too liberal for my taste, but he is funny and says outrageous things mixed with some serious political discussion. He has interesting guests, including many of the political power players. He has many loyal fans.

Imus insults most everybody. Compared to most "shock jocks", in my opinion, he is fairly mild. He was thrown off the air because of a few few offensive remarks. I don't doubt that they were offensive, nor do I defend Imus for them.

Back to my amazement. I am a Christian. I believe that God is the loving creator of the universe and that Jesus is His Son. Millions of Americans worship and love Jesus. To us, Jesus is very real. Yet, on a daily basis on radio and TV, God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit and Christians, are mocked. Christians are offended and hurt. I am offended and hurt.

If Christians complain, the answer is that "free speech" trumps our pain - and the hurt goes on.

But Don Imus is off the air for a few offensive remarks. Amazing.

Another Slap at Christianity - Easter Bunny Out

A school in Rhode Island has banned the Easter Bunny from a school event in an effort to be aware of "other people's backgrounds and traditions". The Easter Bunny will be replaced by Peter Rabbit.

Naturally, the head of the Rhode Island ACLU approves. In response, a Rhode Island legislator plans to offer a bill to save the Easter Bunny.

Secularists will not be happy till all vestiges of Christianity are swept out of the USA. This is reminiscent of the Communist attack on Christianity and the Bible.

The good news is that Jesus lives. A study of "His"story and the Bible shows that God has the last word.

Belgium Tax on Barbecuing Made to Reduce Global Warming

Following is a story I first heard about on Rush's radio show.

Local news reports that Wallonia, Belgium will charge a 20 euro (around 26 U.S. dollars) tax on barbecuing starting June 2007 for each grilling session.

The report says local powers will snoop on burning grills from above in helicopters equipped with thermal sensors.

America - Stand Up for George W. Bush

President Bush has been under attack by the ultra-libs since the 2000 election. Now that the Dems control Congress, the heat has been turned up. The talk of impeachment is in the air.

Shortly after he took office on 9/11/2001, we experienced one of the worst days in the country's history. This unprovoked attack was not George Bush's doing. In fact, 9/11 was one of many other attacks on the US and US interests that started long before George Bush took office. I won't bore you with the history.

The enemy has attacked other countries and peoples too. Many had no close ties to the US.

The difference after 9/11 is that George Bush was President and the US finally fought back. George Bush is the modern-day Winston Churchill. If you don't believe that, study history and lean about how Hitler was country-by-country taking over the world and how Churchill fought back.

Now, more than 5 years from 9/11, we can look back and see that the US has not been attacked since 9/11. There is no doubt that George Bush is responsible for this.

This the time for all Americans to take off their politically biased blinders and stand behind a good and decent man - our President, George W. Bush.

Cold Weather at the North Pole Ends Global Warming Expedition

A global warming expedition to the North Pole ended when one of the explorers got frostbite. Outside temperatures dropped at times to more than 100 degrees below zero.

Ann Atwood, one of the trip organizers, explained that "They were experiencing temperatures that weren't expected with global warming,"

But Atwood, obviously a true believer in Global Warming, was quick to add: "But one of the things we see with global warming is unpredictability."

Interesting logic: If it's too cold, it's because it's too hot.

John Edwards, Nevada Dems Back Out of Fox News Debate

John Edwards and the Dems have pulled out of an August debate in Nevada sponsored by Fox News. Read about that here in a post by John Hinderaker of Powerline on AOL News Bloggers.

The Nevada State Democratic Party pulled the plug on Fox News because the debate "caused some concern among some of our activist allies". Read about that here on the Party's site.

Fox News Vice President David Rhodes shot back in a written statement: "News organizations will want to think twice before getting involved in the Nevada Democratic Caucus, which appears to be controlled by radical fringe out-of-state interest groups, not the Democratic Party." It seems that some Dems are afraid to expose themselves to a news outlet that reports both sides of the story. If anyone doubts that, check out the fair reporting of pros like Britt Hume or Chris Wallace or the commentary of Alan Colmes or Greta Van Susteren.

PETA to Al Gore: Veg Out!

Al Gore is being attacked by PETA. The animal rights organization wants Al to stop eating meat. They base their rationale on a recent UN report titled "Livestock’s Long Shadow—Environmental Issues and Options".

According to PETA, the "United Nations determined that raising animals for food generates more greenhouse gases than all the cars and trucks in the world combined."

It's becoming obvious that the former VP is not "green" enough for the left. He's better "juice up" and trade steak for a good seaweed shake.

Draft Fred Thompson Buzz

It's no secret that conservatives are not too excited about the field in the race for the Republican Presidential nomination. Your hear:

"Rudy's too liberal on social issues"
"John McCain is too friendly with liberal Dems"
"Mitt flips"
"Newt can't win"
"Sam who?"

And it goes on and on.

But ever since the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington, D.C., the GOP Prez buzz has focused on former Tennessee Senator Fred Thompson.

I googled "draft Fred Thompson" and turned up a plethora of hits in the blogosphere. For example, read the post on The Elephant Biz titled: "What If The Right Said Fred?" here and the post on the American Spectator titled "Run, Fred, Run" here.

The lawyer, former politician, actor and radio personality, is a long shot. But he looks to me to be made of the right stuff - in the Ronald Reagan mold. If he tosses his hat in the ring, the right wing very possibly would run, not walk, to his corner.

Hollywood Warms to Al Gore

As icebergs melt and oceans rise, could the political fortunes of former VP Al Gore be rising also?

Those in the know are saying that Al Gore may win an Oscar for his role in the Global Warming documentary, "An Inconvenient Truth". Other speculation is that as his Hollywood star is shining the brightest, Al may grab it and announce that he is running for President - again.

Republicans can only hope that as Senators Clinton and Obama duke it out, the Global Warming Guru will snatch away the Dem nomination.

Chief Illiniwek's Last Stand

It's the last stand for Chief Illiniwek, the University of Illinois very popular mascot.

Political correctness gone wild ended the 81 year tradition of the "Chief", as the U of I finally bowed to the NCAA. In 2005, the university was banned from hosting post season NCAA championship events because of the controversy.

A House hearing on Global Warming was cancelled today because of the snowstorm in Washington.

I can only think of one word to describe this: "hypocrisy".

Barack Obama: Inarticulate Gaff

Sen. Barack Obama has joined a long list of candidates for the 2008 presidential race. He also is leading the Dem scramble to be the most anti-Iraq war.

However, he started his campaign with an "inarticulate" gaff.

A crowd of his supporters cheered wildly when Obama trashed the Iraq war. However, his most outrageous assertion was that the Iraq war "has seen over 3,000 lives of the bravest young Americans wasted."

He then quickly backpedaled in an interview with the Des Moines Register to clarify what he actually meant.

"...What I meant to say was those sacrifices have not been honored by the same attention to strategy, diplomacy and honesty on the part of civilian leadership that would give them a clear mission."

In Spite of Obama's doublespeak, I now feel better that the Illinois Senator once again is "articulate".

My Reply to the "Think Tanks" on Global Warming

One of my readers sent me a very long email, letting me know how misguided I was because I was skeptical about Global Warming. It included lots of facts and conclusions from the "think tanks".

I found one of my old posts about Global Warming and sent it on as my reply. After I read it again, I liked it so much that I decided to repost it. So here it is:

Al Gore on Global Warming: "We are witnessing a collision between our civilization and the Earth."

I remember in the 60's during my college years that many prominent scientists had us believing that the earth was doomed. Dr. Paul Ehrlich, a Sanford University professor and entomologist who specializes in butterflies, was one of the most well known voices predicting environmental disaster. Said the good professor:

"The battle to feed humanity is over. In the 1970s the world will undergo famines . . . hundreds of millions of people (including Americans) are going to starve to death." (1968)

"Smog disasters" in 1973 might kill 200,000 people in New York and Los Angeles. (1969)

"I would take even money that England will not exist in the year 2000." (1969)

Wrong... Wrong... Wrong.

Enter stage left, very left, is the latest "expert" crying "we're doomed". It's the one and only Al Gore, the "almost president" and inventor of the internet. He would have us trembling, or I should say sweating, at the thought of global warming turning New York City into a swamp.

Says the ex-VP:"We are witnessing a collision between our civilization and the Earth."

I think a quote in a lecture in 2003 by Michael Crichton titled "Aliens Cause Global Warming" hits the nail on the head:

"Let's think back to people in 1900 in, say, New York. If they worried about people in 2000, what would they worry about? Probably: Where would people get enough horses? And what would they do about all the horse---t? Horse pollution was bad in 1900, think how much worse it would be a century later, with so many more people riding horses?"

Is Al a true believer? Color me skeptical. I think Al is hoping to ride the gloom and doom wave to another run at the presidency. My prediction: "wipe out".

The chill is ironic in light of the recent dire warnings from "experts" about Global Warming. Brrrr.

Dem Dinosaurs and the Next Ice Age

Hysteria continues over the latest liberal New Age religion, Global Warming. Read the story about this titled "Global warming: Gloom, doom, room for action" here.

As I sit in my family room shivering with outside temperatures hovering around zero, I say "bull". Read my previous posts about this here and here.

The "experts" can't seem to make up their collective minds if we are coming out of or going into an ice age. For those of you old enough, you will remember in the 70's when "Global Cooling" was all the rage. Read the story about this titled "Remember Global Cooling? Why scientists find climate change so hard to predict" here.

But no matter the direction the weather goes, one thing is certain, as far as liberals are concerned: Republicans are to blame.

This is idiotic if you consider that millions of years ago, before Bush, ice ages came and ice ages left (excuse the pun) long before politicians (or humans) were invented. That is, unless you believe that conservative dinosaurs were to blame. But this also can't be true because today the "dinosaurs" are all Democrats.
