SCOTUS and The 10 Commandments

In two decisions today, the Supreme Court seemed to say that the display of the 10 Commandments "in" a courthouse is not OK, but a historical display "outside" a government building is OK.

Muddying the water, they also said that a display in a courtroom (like the one in the Supreme Court Courtroom) is not necessarily unconstitutional. Each display demands "scrutiny to determine whether it goes too far in amounting to a governmental promotion of religion". Read the full story here.

It looks like the ACLU will have fun with these decisions for years - unless President Bush is able to appoint some Supreme Court justices who will stick to the constitution and not make law and the people will elect Senators who will not filibuster the appointments.

Michelle Malkin has an excellent summary of the reactions to the decisions that is worth reading titled SCOTUS WATCH: 10 COMMANDMENTS.

Dems to Rove - Say You're Sorry or Resign

Dems are calling for an apology or the resignation of Karl Rove for some things he said in a recent speech near ground zero in New York.

"Liberals saw the savagery of the 9/11 attacks and wanted to prepare indictments and offer therapy and understanding for our attackers." Conservatives, he said, "saw the savagery of 9/11 and the attacks and prepared for war."

Read the full AP story here.

This smells like an over-reaction to Rove's rather mild "tongue in cheek" remarks to cover for Illinois Dem Sen. Dick Durbin's outrageous comparison of the Guantanamo prison to Nazi camps and Soviet gulags.

Liberal Judges - Cities May Take Homes

The Supreme Court in a 5-4 decision broadened the right of local governments to seize property for private development in Kelo et al v. City of New London, 04-108. Read the story here.

In dissent, Justice O'Connor wrote: "The specter of condemnation hangs over all property... Nothing is to prevent the state from replacing any Motel 6 with a Ritz-Carlton, any home with a shopping mall, or any farm with a factory."

Not a surprise, the majority in this case was the mostly the liberal wing of the court - Stevens, Souter, Ginsburg and Breyer. Justice Anthony Kennedy also joined the majority.

A case like this, which endangers the individual's right to own private property, highlights even more the need for judges on the court who will respect the constitution and not stretch it to fit the liberal agenda.

The only way this will happen is by electing more Republican Senators who will break any Democrat filibuster of judges.

McCain on A Presidential Bid

I watched Sen. John McCain being interviewed on Meet The Press by Tim Russert this morning. One subject that came up was a possible McCain presidential bid.

Trying to challenge McCain's credentials as a Republican nominee, Russert ticked off a list of issues where McCain opposed the President and conservatives which was extensive - from global warming to stem cell research. McCain's defense was that he supported the President in the last election. McCain also said that he supported the President's policies more than he opposed them - but he didn't offer many specifics.

Another interesting fact that Russert pointed out was that in many polls, more Democrats support McCain than Republicans.

As to a question about a presidential run in 2008, McCain replied that he'd make his decision in two years.

It seems like many Republicans have already made their decision on McCain.

Dick Durbin on Guantanamo

Sen. Dick Durbin (D) of Illinois said on the Senate floor about an FBI report about Guantanamo:

"If I read this to you and did not tell you that it was an FBI agent describing what Americans had done to prisoners in their control, you would most certainly believe this must have been done by Nazis, Soviets in their gulags, or some mad regime - Pol Pot or others - that had no concern for human beings." Read the full story here.

It's hard to believe that Sen. Durbin really believes this. Surely he has taken some history courses somewhere and knows the horrors the Nazis and others like them and that the conditions in Guantanamo don't compare. (I understand he has never been to Guantanamo.) There must be an explanation for these "Kennedy like" statements.

I have a theory that the Dems have set up several liberal leaders to make outrageous statements that will shock moderates - both Republicans and Democrats. At the same time, a Democrat like Hillary will move closer and closer to the middle ground so voters will rush to her as a voice of reason once she or he is nominated in 2008.

However, I don't think this strategy will work. The Dems have been pulling the wool over the eyes of Americans so long that it is wearing very thin and people are beginning to see through it.

The President and his advisors are very savvy. The are not over reacting to the howling of the libs. The old saying "give someone enough rope to hang themselves" applies here.

A Movie For The Runaway Bride?

The headline reads "Runaway Bride May Get Movie Deal ". Read the full AP story here.

Somehow this doesn't surprise me even though I am disappointed.

Says Gwinnett County District Attorney Danny Porter: "It's disturbing to me on a personal basis that she's willing to profit from this, but there's nothing I can do about it legally."

Howard Dean - Who Is He Helping Anyway?

Dem party Chairman Howard "The Screamer" Dean is at it again. This time he lashed out at the Republican party as "pretty much a white, Christian party". Earlier he charged that Republicans "never made an honest living in their lives."

It seems that many Republicans are very happy that Dean continues to alienate moderates while more and more Dems are backing way from Dr. Dean and his ridiculous statements.

Read a recent CBS News story about Dr. Dean and his rantings here.

I, for one, find it interesting that "Howard the Screamer" seems to infer that being a white Christian is a negative thing even though he admits that he is a white Christian. Perhaps he is ashamed of his heritage.

It doesn't get any better than this.

Dem Charges About Bush

It's good to be back from an extended vacation. While I did take a sabbatical from blogging, I nevertheless kept an eye on national and world news - especially the political scene.

Some things never change: death, taxes and Dem carping about George Bush. The more they carp, the better Republicans and the President look.

Hillary jumped on the Bush bashing bandwagon Monday by adding her latest unsubstantiated charges.

"There has never been an administration, I don't believe, in our history more intent upon consolidating and abusing power to further their own agenda."

Read the complete AP article here.

Oh, for you Dem folk who kept on whining that Kerry is smarter that Bush - the truth is out. It has just been reported that Bush's GPA at Yale was "virtually identical" to Kerry's. Read the AP story here.
