The Dems would have us believe that the proposed change of rules in the Senate to end filibusters for Federal judicial nominees will be the beginning of the end of the Republic.
If you believe that, you probably still believe in the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy. What is the truth about the filibuster as it applies to judicial appointments?
Wendy E. Long's excellent Op-Ed in the Washington Times titled Filibuster Myth-Busters dispels the five most popular myths about the judicial nominee filibuster. For example:
"Myth No. 1: Filibuster of judges is a sacred tradition. Fact: The filibuster is nowhere in the Constitution. It is not among the 'checks and balances' our Founding Fathers created. It did not even exist until the 1830s, and the 'tradition' involves legislation, not judicial appointments. The filibuster was used to defend slavery and oppose the Civil Rights Act - hardly noble purposes. The current obstruction of judges is no 'traditional' filibuster: it is the first time in more than 200 years that either party has filibustered to keep judges with majority support off the federal bench."
The Republicans in the Senate are right about the Dems misuse of the filibuster and they need to act as soon as possible to end Dem obstructionism.

Ann Coulter - A Thorn in The Side of Liberals
Time cover girl (see the Drudge story here) Ann Coulter is the subject of an excellent recent Powerline post. It seems that libs can dish it out, but are unable to take it - especially from Coulter, who is a brilliant lawyer and graduate of Michigan Law School.

Defending The Faith
It took less than a day for politics to be injected into the election of Pope Benedict XVI.
Hence the Yahoo AFP article titled New Pope Intervened Against Kerry in US 2004 Election Campaign.
The new Pope is credited (or blamed, depending on your perspective) of tilting the 2004 US Presidential Election in favor of George Bush by sending a letter to US Bishops spelling out what constituted worthiness for those who take communion. Then Cardinal Ratzinger ruled that those strongly and openly in support of abortion were guilty of a "grave sin" and should be denied the Catholic sacrament.
This led to John Kerry, an abortion advocate, being denied communion by several, but not all, Catholic Bishops.
The alleged political fallout came when a majority of Catholics voted for George Bush. Traditionally, Catholics vote democratic.
Shame on Cardinal Ratzinger for defending the Faith.

White Smoke and Bells - A New Pope...breaking
Just minutes ago, at first the crowd saw black smoke coming from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel in St. Peter's Square . Then it gradually turned white and the crowd cheered. Now, as I'm watching Fox News, the bells are chiming and the world has a new Pope.
However, the name of the new Pope has not yet been announced. I will be adding updates to this post as they develop.

Mae Magouirk Move to Alabama Hospital Confirmed...breaking
Both BlogsforTerri and WorldNetDaily have confirmed that 81 year old Mae Magouirk has been airlifted to the University of Alabama-Birmingham Medical Center.
Her nephew, Ken Mullinax, told WorldNetDaily that "she is receiving food, fluids, cardiac care and neurological help." Read the full story here.
Mr. Mullinax credits WorldNetDaily and the friends of Terri Schiavo for Mrs. Magouirk's move from a hospice where he believed that she had been without substantial nourishment for 10 days, to the Alabama hospital.
However, BlogsforTerri in this post encouraged bloggers and it's readers to keep up the fight because the opposition is still trying to get Mae back to the hospice.

It's OK to Stand Your Ground in Florida
A new law in Florida will allow people use deadly force for self-defense on the street without trying to escape. Read the full Yahoo News Reuters story here.
Previously, the victim of such an attack had to attempt to escape or flee before he or she used deadly force.
Predictably, Dems are against the law.
"For a House that talks about the culture of life it's ironic that we would be devaluing life in this bill...That's exactly what we're doing." - Democratic state Rep. Dan Gelber.
Republicans who are in the majority have a different view.
"This is about meeting force with force...If I'm attacked, I should not have to retreat." - House sponsor Republican state Rep. Dennis Baxley.
Again, liberals are more concerned about protecting criminals that protecting innocent life as in the Terri Schiavo case, the unborn and now victims of an attack.
Republican Governor Jeb Bush is expected to sign the bill.

Air Gore
I have been trying to understand why former VP and inventor of the Internet Al Gore is starting another TV channel. In my view, the last thing we need is another cable channel.
I became weary of flipping channels and finally settled tuning into Fox News with the sound turned down while I went about other stimulating activities, like blogging.
Some feel that the new venture is an answer to Rush Limbaugh or "fair and balanced" Fox News with Sean Hannity. Al says no, as reported in an AP Yahoo News Story:
"We have no intention of being a Democratic channel, a liberal channel or the TV version of Air America," Gore said, referring to the fledgling liberal radio network. "It is not in any way an ideological, much less partisan point of view in any respect. It will have the point of view of the young generation."
I find it hard to believe that one of the "screamers" could resist injecting some Dem venom in this project.
Stay tuned...or not?

The Pope and Terri Schiavo - What Next?
The Pope stood for life - Including the life of Terri Schiavo. He had said that providing sustenance (water and food) is not "artificial life support" as some have argued. The Pope lived under the Nazis and Soviet dominance. He knew and believed in the value of all life. I don't believe that Terri's and the Pope's death happening so close together is a coincidence. Is God sending us a message?
I am re-posting "Terri Schiavo - What Next" (following) to reinforce the need to stand for life.
Also, I put up a new "skin" on my website, GettingElected.com, that has a background of the Supreme Court building. The new design is appropriate because this is where the political battle for "life" will be fought. The President more than ever needs our support to get Senators elected who will vote to confirm Supreme Court Justices who will interpret law, not make it.
Terri Schiavo - What Next?
A recent post by Dory on BlogsforTerri titled "Let's Stand on Common Ground and Save S0me Lives" makes a lot of sense.
"In a previous post I brought out how support for saving Terri's life is coming from both sides of the political spectrum. To some this is an issue of discrimination against the disabled, as an able person in Terri's general state of health would never have been a candidate for such treatment. To others the issue is the intrinsic value of human life as the image-bearer of God, and man having no authority from God to take it under these circumstances.
What I see here is the basis for some real cooperation between these two groups. If we can manage to work together, we can save some lives. What we agree on is that sustenance and medical care ought not be withheld from people because they are disabled and because they cannot speak for themselves."... Read the full post here.
This is how I responded to Dory's post:
"While I am pro-life, what you suggest makes a lot of sense. What is happening to Terri and others like her make no sense. Count me in. I offer free email advice (subject to my own ability to respond) to anyone wanting to run for political office. Also, there is much information at my site to help those who want to get elected. I will also be adding more information related to saving the lives of the disabled. If anyone wants to make a suggestion to improve my site to this end, I am open to suggestions.
Dan England, GettingElected.com"
Many of us have been asking the question: "What next?" My offer is open, if you want to help others like Terri by getting elected, send me an email at dan.england@gettingelected.com. You can get more information at my site GettingElected.com.

Restore The Balance - Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness
Screwy Hoolie of Scrutiny Hooligans commented to one of my posts in defense of Terri: "I'm on the side of the Constitution, the Rule of Law, and Science." This was my response.
"So am I - "Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness". The constitution set up a balance of power between the three branches of government. Very few doubt that "activist judges" have gone beyond interpreting laws by making findings that go beyond the law. In fact, judicial legislating.
However, there are mechanisms to restore the balance. At the state level, voters need to elect judges who will interpret laws strictly. At the federal level, voters need to elect Senators who will approve the appointments of George Bush."
