Sen. Dick Durbin (D) of Illinois said on the Senate floor about an FBI report about Guantanamo:
"If I read this to you and did not tell you that it was an FBI agent describing what Americans had done to prisoners in their control, you would most certainly believe this must have been done by Nazis, Soviets in their gulags, or some mad regime - Pol Pot or others - that had no concern for human beings." Read the full story here.
It's hard to believe that Sen. Durbin really believes this. Surely he has taken some history courses somewhere and knows the horrors the Nazis and others like them and that the conditions in Guantanamo don't compare. (I understand he has never been to Guantanamo.) There must be an explanation for these "Kennedy like" statements.
I have a theory that the Dems have set up several liberal leaders to make outrageous statements that will shock moderates - both Republicans and Democrats. At the same time, a Democrat like Hillary will move closer and closer to the middle ground so voters will rush to her as a voice of reason once she or he is nominated in 2008.
However, I don't think this strategy will work. The Dems have been pulling the wool over the eyes of Americans so long that it is wearing very thin and people are beginning to see through it.
The President and his advisors are very savvy. The are not over reacting to the howling of the libs. The old saying "give someone enough rope to hang themselves" applies here.
